7/2/07 Attenuator Test

Does the Airbrake kill your sound as you engage more attenuation?  Does the Hot Plate?  Is one vastly better than the other?  Lets find out!

The setup:

Grosh Tele > Dr. Z Prescription ES > Attenuator > Weber Ceramic Blue Dog

The method:  Record a short piece at each attenuator setting, compensating for the lowered volume using the level controls on the studio mixer.  Then use Normalize in Sound Forge to set each clip to -.02db on the largest peak.

The clips:

0000001.mp3 (Airbrake Thru)
0000002.mp3 (Airbrake -1 click)
0000003.mp3 (Airbrake -2 clicks)
0000004.mp3 (Airbrake -3 clicks)
0000005.mp3 (Airbrake -4 clicks)
0000006.mp3 (Airbrake -5 clicks - bedroom)
0000010.mp3 (Hot Plate thru)
0000011.mp3 (Hot Plate -4db)
0000012.mp3 (Hot Plate -8db)
0000013.mp3 (Hot Plate -12db)
0000014.mp3 (Hot Plate -16db - bedroom)

Both "bedroom" clips were done with the rheostat full up.

Another comparison clip:

Grosh Bent Top Custom (neck Fralin Blues Special) > Radial JX-2
Radial JX-2 out1 > RXES > Airbrake (Bedroom Max) > Celestion Alnico Gold
Radial JX-2 out2 > SRZ-65 > Airbrake (Bedroom Max) > Celestion Alnico Gold

RXES is heard first, then the SRZ.

Settings:

Some Jimi-inspired wanking:

Grosh Bent Top Custom (neck & middle Fralin Blues Specials on 6) > Radial JX-2
Radial JX-2 out1 > RXES > Airbrake (Bedroom Max) > Celestion Alnico Gold
Radial JX-2 out2 > Stingray > Airbrake (-4 clicks) > Celestion Alnico Gold
